Stem Thinking #7...

I don't exactly care eitherway in such a situation. If we were to become a power, very well. If not, very well. Its just not exactly something I think about much. Now, if we in some way or another did become a leading power in such fields, I would acknowledge it as a positive. However, until such an event arises, I'll continue looking at the situation with a slight lack of care.

On a related-note, this will be my final Globaloria blog, within three weeks or so, this blog will be used as an outlet for random ranting and game reviews.

For Azeroth. >_>

Stem Thinking #6

Having a goal to create something in the future tends to be a rather awkward goal, in that if given away, someone else will most likely attempt it before the one who originated the idea has a chance. On the other hand, there are those who would actually assist those who pose their ideas. I find such an act to be quite noble in fact. That being said, I don't exactly have any idea or anything I'd like to assist with right now. Though I wouldn't mind helping a cause that I found worthy and felt like I could actually make a difference in, if I were to find one.

Stem Thinking #4-5

Out of boredom I guess, I decided to throw two of the assigned blogs together. In all honesty I haven't exactly been "inspired" to take STEM classes. That's not to say that I wouldn't look forward to or enjoy taking them, but at the moment they simply aren't a priority. The same applies to careers as well.

Career

Now is a time when most people tend to seriously contemplate what career they wish to be a part of. Of course everyone has their goals and dreams, but but now is when most attempt to set their path. I had always intended to go into the field of game design, however, through a random sequence of events, I've began to question such a choice. I had always had the back-up plan of, "If it doesn't work out I'd like to try to be a tester," but I just don't really see that now ._.. Although, I've recently been taking a look into voice acting... Though my goal is still to be within the field of game design, maybe I can reach it a different way? Any who, one of the central points of this blog is to note if their are any connections between one's goal and the game they've been working on. In a way, yes, and in a way, no. Either way, in the end it can do nothing but help right :o?

Rather helpful, no?

On this most interesting of occasions, I would like to speak of what I consider to be 3 of the most helpful inventions. The first these would include the invention of long-range communication, the most common example of these would be a phone. Such forms of communication allow us to immediately converse with those far away or, more importantly ask for assistance whenever needed. The second among these would most likely be the discovery of cells and microscopic being... well, by that logic I could probably just say microscopes no? Either way, without knowledge of such things we wouldn't have many forms of medicine and treatments. The final of the trio in my mind would most likely be the creation of "self-help" groups. These organizations are usually formed by those who have in some way suffered do to the effects of some addiction or by someone who has had one. These groups try not to pry into the lives of others, since they understand what's its like for the addictee, and instead allow the people to come to them if needed.

Hmmmm... feels more serious than normal... not saying much but strange. Either way, for the Horde and everything else...
Also, maybe a teeeeeeensy bit of <3 for Alliance...

A Difficult Piece.

The prospect of making a game about the negative repercussions of gambling is a rather challenging one. However, due to a last second change, we were able to avoid the most controversial issue of our game. Originally it took place in a casino, of which you were trapped in. You were forced to play the various gambling games in order to get enough money to pay your way out. Many questioned us as to what the educational value of teaching people how to gamble was. In the end though, we changed the game into a trivia. Though the the game itself has changed, the message it sends has not.

Gambling can be rather dangerous if one succumbs to it.

On the Clock :O

The timer was considered by many of the group to be rudimentary in comparison to the others, but, essential none-the-less. A few ideas have been tossed around as to what to do with the timer, however, none of us have come to a conclusion. So, until we find an actual use for it, we'll keep it in cryo. The timer itself show two times, the acual timer, and a countdown timer that shows how long it has been since the timer hit zero.

Said timer can be found here:

Score Keeping

For a game about gambling.... or rather the wrongs of it... I think, score keeping is an absolute necessity. We first experimented on this topic by modifying the actionscript of two games, Fly Catcher and Go Rabbit, Go! Afterwards, we made a small flash where one can increase or decrease the score.

Said flash can be found here:

Preloader

Preloaders are an important part of any game, and ours is no acception. The main screen preloader, characterized by a number of cards layed out with the last card having a play button on it, is the first loader used in the game. There were a few issues on this topic, however, they were eventually rectified and the preloaders were uploaded.

The main screen preloader can be found here:

Sound Effects

The sound effects file is characterized by 2 buttons (Play and Stop) and a slider that controls the volume. Information on how to create this small piece was located on various tutorials.

Said file can be seen here:

Character Effects

The last topic that was completed were the character effects. It is characterized by a large object a multiple boxes to the side. As one scrolls over these boxes, the object's color changes to that of the color of the box.

This file can be seen here:

I did something? :o

Mmmmk, so we ended up doing a "Learning from Others" thing last Tuesday. As a few of the others stated, it was mostly basic stuff, but I guess after our random extended snow days, we could've used it... Aaaaanywho, as we were looking for tutorials, I was able to find coding for a random number generator (yay). Soooo, now we'll prolly spend the next 2 weeks trying to bash it into our card system... thing.. Blah, same old same old, For the Horde and such.

Wb

Aaaaand we're back, after yet another semi-random snow/ice/sleet/~insert random form of precipitation~ storm, we got a nice little break... almost 2 weeks, almost. Anywho, before the break, we did a little action scripting. Well, we watched a video and played around with a few games (7-mile frog tongue ftw). Unfortunately, the video had a few syncing issues, and a few students had problems with the games. Both of these were remedied, but meh. Anywho, as the lazily abbreviated title says, welcome back.

P.s. For the Horde.

Why is it so wondeful?

I've watched it 19 times now -.-

Practice run kgo.

Mmmk, we recently did a practice presentation for Elite Shuffles game. And... its... bleh. I that I did not speak nearly loud enough, it was to the point of which it was actually a teensy bit difficult to hear me at the beginning... middle... and end.. and apparently people agree ~points at reviews~.Let's just say I fail ^_^

Anywho, since we were the first to do the presentation, we were going in a teensy bit blind... maybe. Of course we could've checked on other presentations for examples before we did ours, yet we did not do so. Other than a few random moments, and my inability to actually speak up, we were also missing a great deal of imformation. From our lack of information, to not even mentioning the people on our team. Blah blah blah, we missed alot... Either way, we just need to touch up a bit. On a side-note, the other groups did magnificent. Though 2 of them did have a few issues on their first go around, they did very well. Now, if it comes to who I thought did the best, if I were to take errors into account, I feel that Klangfarben's presentation. However, without that in place, I'd say the Epic Failz had the best :o

Dance Party....

You ever listen to a song so long, that everything you hear, see, and do begins to meld with the beat. You may be in mid-conversation when you suddenly notice that you're following the beat. A few steps can become a myriad of movement in a moment. All these culminate into one thing... Dance Party. A simple thought, a simple event, yet, almost never seen. Anywho, I guess the point of this is...

The only problem is that I think I turned George into a vegetable..... anywho, toodles :3

"Dream" Job

My goals are a little short sighted at this point, however, I do wish to pursue a career in the field of game design. Though, speaking realistically, game design isn't exactly a safe field. The economy of games, although for the most part it stays steady, individual companies are constantly struggling for dominance. Choosing the right company/group is almost as important as making the actual decision to join such a field. Not to mention the myriad of fields one must study to actually become successful is quite large. Although, I must admit, this class has definitely helped me understand, at least a little, just how much work is put into even the most minuscule of games, which, has actually helped me judge games far less harshly and allowed me to commend them for their merits. Either way, blah blah blah, For the Horde :P

Late #2: Game Topic

In retro-spec I could probably have thrown these blogs together after all.. anywho. Either way, the topic of the game is about gambling its negative repercussions. Debt, depression, addiction, and mafia... sure why not, I would've tossed in a panda for good messure but everyone was like, "Pandas don't belong in a gambling game...". Pfft. I look forward to actually being able to play it :o

Late... again

Yay for being absent.... no. Ooook, thought about tossing 2 of my late blogs into 1, buuuuuuut, meh. I'm actually starting to become interested in the games being made in the class, which, for some reason, kinda surprises me. Maybe its just the thought of finally being able to test out what everyones been working on, eitherway, later :P
